Hunting In BC Now Compared To 30 Years Ago
Here are some interesting numbers on hunting in BC. These numbers were obtained from the Fish and Wildlife Branch in Victoria
In 1976 there were 139,489 licensed resident hunters in BC, there were 445 Non-Resident Canadians, and 3542 Non-Canadians.
In 2005/2006 there were only 88,334 licensed resident hunters in BC. Yet, there were 663 Non-Resident Canadian hunters, up from 445. There was also an increase in Non-Canadian hunters, 5711 hunters, up from 3542, an increase of nearly 2200 hunters.
There was also only 6 LEH draws back in 1976, compared to approximately 1150 now.
I’m not sure the reasoning behind so many LEH draws other than maybe a cash grab for the government. Sure they might be making money on LEH tags, but limiting the hunting to LEH in a lot of areas is leading to the decrease in hunters not wanting to bother. There has been no significant decrease in animal populations that I know of, and with the decrease in hunter numbers by nearly half, that many LEH draws does not make sense to me.
Please read this copy of the Ministry of Environment/Fish and Wildlife Branch Strategy for Resident Hunter Recruitment and Retention in British Columbia. It has some great idea’s and is still subject to our opinions, so if you have an opinion please contact the Fish and Wildlife Branch.
