Possible World Record Moose???

This moose is rumoured to be shot near Terrace, British Columbia. I have also read it was shot in Russsia. Regardless, it is huge!! It is said that it is a possible new world record! I do not know alot about moose, and it is hard to tell from pictures how big animals really are, but, this bull is a monster. I have never seen palms or paddles that big. I will update if I hear any more about this being a new record, and try to find the official score! It looks like the bull was shot in Russia and here is the story that goes with it:

I hunted the moose you see in the photograph in Russia, on the Kamchatka Peninsula with Bob Hodson’s Sable Expeditions out of Anchorage Alaska. I took the moose in Early December 2001 on a 14-day hunt. My brother and I flew from Petropavlosk via helicopter to the hunt area, where we stayed in trappers’ cabins. We would leave each morning via skis and ski all day looking for tracks, or for moose. On average, we skied about 15 miles per day. Game was very scarce due to the very heavy, early-snow conditions.

In two weeks of hunting I saw 13 moose, and my brother saw only two. The area we were hunting is very remote and has limited access. Hence, moose have the opportunity to reach maturity. The genetics are some of the best in the world.

My moose is a monster, I was extremely lucky to ski up on him. It was a difficult shot for my .338 at 350 yards, because he was bedded behind a drainage with only one foot of his back exposed. We could see his antlers sticking out over the drainage. One shot spined the moose and he never got out of his bed. It took me and my two guides, Igor and Dimia, 40 minutes to ski to the downed animal.

This was one of the toughest hunts I have been on through my travels around the world. I refer to the hunt as a ‘tough man’s contest,’ rather then a hunt. It was a great experience. My brother Troy will be returning next year. As to the score of the moose, it should end up somewhere between 550 and 600 points SCI. It has huge mass and extremely wide paddles, with 20 points on one side and 18 points on the other.

The cost of this hunt was about $20,000 not including trophy shipment or taxidermy. The high cost is mostly because of the remoteness of the hunt area. – Jay Link.

Antler Sheds!

From now until June, we will be hiking theĀ  hills, every free moment possible, looking for antler sheds! Today, January 27, 2008, Calvin and I had a couple hours to spare so we got up at 4:30 a.m and headed for the hills. At 7:00 a.m we arrived at our destination. We only had 2 hours to check our 3 trail camera’s and have a quick look for sheds. The camera’s were a disappointment as the temperature had dropped to about -20 Celsius and the camera’s didn’t take pictures during the cold nights. We only had about 45 minutes left to shed hunt, so up the hill in a foot of snow we went. It was all worth it when I spotted a nice shed lying under a tree about 20 yards up the trail from where I was walking. I ran to it as fast as I could and Calvin and I were very excited to see it was the right hand side of a very nice buck. It is a 5 point with a couple trash points near the base. I measured the antler as soon a I arrived home and it scored 65 and 3 /8 inches. This buck has a great inside spread, 9 inches on this antler alone, giving the average of 3 inches from base to base on the skull, and assuming another 9 inches on the left side, gives this buck a 21 inch inside spread. It has a great main beam of 23 inches, points of 5,6,8,9 inches and all 4 mass measurements over 4 inches. If the left antler was equal, and believe me, we will be searching hard for it, this buck should gross somewhere in the mid 150’s.

These pictures were emailed to me recently, thank you Mark! This buck was killed by a 9 year old boy in Oklahoma! It is rumoured that Cabela’s has offered $150,000.00 for this buck. The buck has a total of 41 points. Enjoy the pictures!

Shed Antlers!

Calvin Davis, Robert Wagner, and myself, Cory Jmaeff, took off to our trail camera’s again today, January 22, 2008. We left town around 3:00 pm, it takes about 1.5 hours to get there so we had about 45 minutes to look for shed antlers before checking for picture’s on the trail camera’s. Within the first 15 minutes of hiking some trails, Calvin found a decent 4 point shed laying in a deer bed. We quickly surveyed the immediate area but could not find the other side. We then kept walking, making our way to our trail cam’s, but found no more sheds. There were quite a few pictures on the camera’s, but all of bucks that have already dropped their antlers. In an upcoming blog I will be giving my opinion on where to look for shed antlers, the area’s I have my best luck, as well as some insight on when and they shed their antlers. If you go to the home page of this site and click on More Pictures, then click on Shed Antlers, you will see some the sheds I picked up last year.Photos dropped-buck-1.jpg dropped-buck-2.jpg

Edgewood BC, 4×4 Whitetail Buck!

Posted by Jammer On January - 21 - 2008 ADD COMMENTS

jason-norgan-4×4-whitetailrfss.jpg 27 year old Jason Norgan of Enderby BC, shot this great Whitetail buck on November 12, 2007. I met Jason and his buddies at the Lumby big buck night, Sat. January 19, 2008. They all shot good bucks last season because they spend a lot of time in the bush. That is the single most effective way of shooting a deer every season, spend lots of time in the bush, you can’t shoot a deer sitting on your couch!! Jason had just recieved his hunter number in October, he then hit the bush hard, and was rewarded with this great buck! Nice meeting you guys, thanks for the picture Jason, keep in touch!
