Cougar Hunting 2008
Merry Christmas everyone! Hope Santa was good to all, and everyone received lots of hunting supplies for Christmas!!
On boxing day we took off for a Cougar hunt. I had only ever been hunting the big cat’s once before, and we never cut a track big enough to release the dogs on. Yesterday, Dean, Shawn, Seth, Shawn’s 11 year son Dakota, and myself, were into the cat’s right away. We cut a small track first, and about 5 minutes later cut a really nice Cougar track, let the fun begin, it was about 8:00 am. We all undressed from our heavy clothes and put on out lighter clothes. When you are trtacking a Cougar you are working really hard so no need for heavy gear. It is always good to bring some duct tape, to tape your pants around your boots, and to where a jacket with a hood for going through all the snowy tree’s!
Time to release the dogs, Katie and Miley! The dogs got on the track and we were off and running. We saw the dogs in the distance a couple of times but it took about 4.5 hours, and about 5 kilometers through the mountains when we finally caught up to the dogs where they had a 2 year old Cougar trapped under a log! The Cougar was not big enough to shoot so we shot some video and made our way back to the truck before dark. We think the dogs tree’d the bigger cat back by a kill we had found, but, because it was taking us a while to climb the mountain in the deep snow, the dogs picked up another Cougar track and that was the small one they trapped under the log. It is really neet watching those dogs work a cat track!
Not alot of people hunt Cougar any more and there are lots around B.C. now. Cougar’s will kill on average 1 deer per week, per Cougar. We cut 4 Cougar tracks in the small area we hunted yesterday. Deer spend about 4-5 months in there winter range and with 4 Cougar’s in that area that would be 64-80 deer killls in those 4-5 months!!
