Semi-live Texas Axis Deer Hunt

Posted by Jammer On July - 27 - 2009 4 COMMENTS

Shawn and I have left for our latest Texas adventure. While temperatures soar at home, hovering around ninety degrees, hunting might not be at the front of many people’s minds, but given the opportunity to sneak a hunt in during the dog days of summer was too much to resist. Especially when the opportunity arose to hunt species we’ve never pursued before, Axis deer and Blackbuck antelope.

As I’m writing this, Shawn and I are in the Dallas/Ft. Worth airport awaiting the arrival of our hunting partners, Seth Wright of Extreme Hunting Adventures and Mike Gatz, featured in our Kansas whitetail hunt back in December. With the rain falling here in Dallas, flights are being delayed and we’re patiently waiting to head to San Angelo.

Not only are we excited about the upcoming hunt, but Shawn and I are super excited to see how our semi-live hunt will work out for all of you at home. Since leaving home at ten o’clock last night, driving all night to Seattle and jumping on a plane to Dallas, we’ve been able to put together a little bit of video that we will be posting tomorrow, so stay tuned, and keep checking in as Antler Outdoors brings you our first ever semi-live hunt from Texas! Sorry, we are not sure why the audio didn’t work!

Dan Leadbetter, Hunting in British Columbia

Posted by Jammer On July - 23 - 2009 1 COMMENT

Cory, I took this buck 2 days before the season ended 2 years ago…….I’m on the right, brother in-law on the left…I shoot a Remington 300 mag, stainless with a 4-14.5 wide angle Leopold………this is the next morning which is a Sunday, we brought the deer back for photo’s as it was nearing that point of decent light to shoot the day before so photo’s would of not turned out so well, when we first spotted him he was coming towards us than he turned and started running up the hill in the back ground almost to the furthest point on the left to the tree line, brother in-law figures this buck was between 500-600 yards when the buck stopped & I dropped to the ground, bipod open, once I got on him through the scope I squeezed the first shot off, it was like seconds went by, than we could clearly hear the WHACK’’ echo back, he took a couple steps back towards the tree line , stopped and I squeezed another round off, he flinched, took about 10 steps down the hill towards me and dropped……..now he’s one a few beautiful racks on my office wall.

Ed Collett & Dan Leadbetter were on an open 1 week moose hunt north of Kitwanga…this is the first morning, we went as far as we could on an old grown up log road to the landing. we walked through the bush and down the valley until we figured was a good spot to get set up…about 15 minutes after I started to call we had 2 very nice mature bull moose coming down off a shelf across the pond about 250 yards away…….I kept calling and they kept coming, needless to say the adrenaline is starting to flow………the weather was extremely warm and our concern was if we could get the moose out quick enough because of the distance we were away from the jeep……we lost site of the 2 mature bulls as they went in behind what we thought was a meadow from where we were, I kept calling and than nothing………after about 1 hour we looked down the valley across the pond and here comes a very large mature bull, the animal was about 800 yards from where we were set up and he was in no hurry, just walking along the outside grazing as he was nearing, than he went out of site & again nothing ( Like where did they all go )…after about 45 minutes I was spotting down the furthest part of another pond which was separated as to which the beavers dammed it up, I couldn’t believe my eyes, out of no where this young immature bull moose charges up over the ledge of the dammed pond and leaps into the water, wow, something’s up here we are thinking, 5 seconds later appears this male wolf and a partner, Ed & I thought lets see what happens here and if they get close to us we’ll take one or both, the moose bye this time had been swimming towards where we were more in the middle of the old pond, as the moose swam the wolves also kept coming towards where we were, every time the moose would want to come to dry ground both wolves would come to the edge of the water and no further,’’hey we are thinking, this just might work out’’, bi-pods down and both set up we racked a shell, the wolves were now coming closer to us and if they were to cross over to our side to have a chance at the moose they had to begin crossing about 75 yards from us and if they came over they were going to be 20 yards, we waited and waited and sure enough the black male came straight across from us and stopped broad side, my brother in-law Ed squeezed the shot off and down he went like a sack of spuds, Ed & I both tried to pick up & scope the second wolf but it hadn’t come as far as this male and stayed inside the tree line so neither of us were able to take a shot, the immature bull moose stood in the pond the entire time we were they and as we packed the wolf out we looked back and he was still standing there, I’m sure he was thinking, these 2 guys are not so bad, saved my hide………after this all went down both Ed & I said, I just didn’t have the heart to take the immature bull even though he was close enough we could of lassoed him……….

Great stories, thanks for the pictures Dan and Ed!

Hunting in Texas, Axis Deer and Blackbuck

Posted by Jammer On July - 17 - 2009 1 COMMENT

On the 27th of July, Shawn and I going to tape our two good buddies, Seth Wright, and Micheal Gatz, on a free range axis deer and blackbuck hunt in South Central Texas near San Angelo! Shawn and I have never seen a live axis deer let alone been on a hunt for one, so we are very excited!

Shawn and I are anxiously awaiting our new laptop that can handle editing of hi-def video. If we have our laptop before going to Texas we plan on bringing semi-live hunts to our site. We will post short video clips after each day of hunting so you all can follow and see how the hunt is going!

We don’t know a whole lot about these animals but we’ve done a little research and here’s what we’ve come up with.

Axis deer are the most prolific exotic ungulate in Texas. Introduced around 1932, the axis deer, or chital, as they’re known in their native India are a moderately large, spotted deer weighing roughly 150lbs and anatomically resembles an elk more than our native deer. The antlers on the axis deer resemble a 3pt elk.

The blackbuck are also from India and are about half the size of the axis deer. They are predominently dark in color with white bellies. Black buck are one of the only antelope where only the males have horns which spiral up to five times and can grow to a length of 29″

The one thing that both of these animals have in common is that they are both very spooky.

While there we’re hoping to get the opportunity to do some pig hunting and take a couple of those big Texas boars with our bows. So stay tuned to Antler Outdoors as we try to bring you our very first semi-live hunt from Texas July 27-31.

ATV Insurance Information For BC

Posted by Jammer On July - 17 - 2009 4 COMMENTS

Here is  bit of information that was news to me and I think we all should know. It was sent to me by a friend in the insurance business and I found it very interesting.

If you have any customers who state they are members of a “Fish & Games Club” or the “BC Wildlife Federation” and they “already have liability for their ATV’s” included in their membership to their local clubs……

Your response should be:

1.) They are ONLY covered on Private Lands
-This does NOT included forest service roads, logging roads, back-country service areas, etc.
2.) They are only insured while in the act of hunting, fishing, etc.
-This does not include recreational/pleasure use of the ATV
-It must be shown that their intention is for hunting and/or fishing for their BCWF liability policy to cover them,   once again remember…….they are not coverage on forestry roads.

It has come to our attention that when selling the ATV Physical Damage insurance not everyone is selling the ATV Liability coverage along with it.
Just to be clear, here are a few key points to help you in your client interactions!!
1.) Why Your Customer Needs Liability on Their All Terrain Vehicle:

a.) It is now mandatory for Everyone to carry TPL on ATV’s while operating on back-country forest service roads, logging roads, etc
b.) It will be up to a $600.00 FINE for no insurance
c.) It is not up to you to determine what is deemed a “forestry road”, your clients will have to check with forest services
d.) This policy will cover Bodily Injury and Property Damage to a third party if the insured is found legal liable for damages.
2.) Requirements, Eligibility and/or Qualifications to Purchase our ATV Liability Policy:

a.) Applicant has had their drivers license for a minimum of 5 years  OR
b.) Applicant has owned an ATV for a minimum of 3 years and is over the age of 19   OR
c.) They must have attended a CSC Safe Operators Course and provide the Certificate  OR
d.) They are a member of ATV BC (Quad Riders Association), refer to www.ATVBC.ca to purchase a membership
OK!  Now once your client meets ONLY ONE of these requirements, you need to advise WHO IS AN INSURED?
3.) Insured Persons Under This Policy Are:

a.) The vehicle owner   AND
b.) Insured’s spouse  AND
c.) ***with permission and who meet the requirements:
i.  any resident family member 15 years and older
ii. dependant children 15 years and older who are away at school

Like I said, this is information passed onto us by someone in the insurance business, we haven’t had a chance to look any further into this, if anyone out there can confirm  this information to be accurate, or can add more info, please let us know.
