Cory, I took this buck 2 days before the season ended 2 years ago…….I’m on the right, brother in-law on the left…I shoot a Remington 300 mag, stainless with a 4-14.5 wide angle Leopold………this is the next morning which is a Sunday, we brought the deer back for photo’s as it was nearing that point of decent light to shoot the day before so photo’s would of not turned out so well, when we first spotted him he was coming towards us than he turned and started running up the hill in the back ground almost to the furthest point on the left to the tree line, brother in-law figures this buck was between 500-600 yards when the buck stopped & I dropped to the ground, bipod open, once I got on him through the scope I squeezed the first shot off, it was like seconds went by, than we could clearly hear the WHACK’’ echo back, he took a couple steps back towards the tree line , stopped and I squeezed another round off, he flinched, took about 10 steps down the hill towards me and dropped……..now he’s one a few beautiful racks on my office wall.
Ed Collett & Dan Leadbetter were on an open 1 week moose hunt north of Kitwanga…this is the first morning, we went as far as we could on an old grown up log road to the landing. we walked through the bush and down the valley until we figured was a good spot to get set up…about 15 minutes after I started to call we had 2 very nice mature bull moose coming down off a shelf across the pond about 250 yards away…….I kept calling and they kept coming, needless to say the adrenaline is starting to flow………the weather was extremely warm and our concern was if we could get the moose out quick enough because of the distance we were away from the jeep……we lost site of the 2 mature bulls as they went in behind what we thought was a meadow from where we were, I kept calling and than nothing………after about 1 hour we looked down the valley across the pond and here comes a very large mature bull, the animal was about 800 yards from where we were set up and he was in no hurry, just walking along the outside grazing as he was nearing, than he went out of site & again nothing ( Like where did they all go )…after about 45 minutes I was spotting down the furthest part of another pond which was separated as to which the beavers dammed it up, I couldn’t believe my eyes, out of no where this young immature bull moose charges up over the ledge of the dammed pond and leaps into the water, wow, something’s up here we are thinking, 5 seconds later appears this male wolf and a partner, Ed & I thought lets see what happens here and if they get close to us we’ll take one or both, the moose bye this time had been swimming towards where we were more in the middle of the old pond, as the moose swam the wolves also kept coming towards where we were, every time the moose would want to come to dry ground both wolves would come to the edge of the water and no further,’’hey we are thinking, this just might work out’’, bi-pods down and both set up we racked a shell, the wolves were now coming closer to us and if they were to cross over to our side to have a chance at the moose they had to begin crossing about 75 yards from us and if they came over they were going to be 20 yards, we waited and waited and sure enough the black male came straight across from us and stopped broad side, my brother in-law Ed squeezed the shot off and down he went like a sack of spuds, Ed & I both tried to pick up & scope the second wolf but it hadn’t come as far as this male and stayed inside the tree line so neither of us were able to take a shot, the immature bull moose stood in the pond the entire time we were they and as we packed the wolf out we looked back and he was still standing there, I’m sure he was thinking, these 2 guys are not so bad, saved my hide………after this all went down both Ed & I said, I just didn’t have the heart to take the immature bull even though he was close enough we could of lassoed him……….
Great stories, thanks for the pictures Dan and Ed!
