Here is a clip from our archery hunt from Sept. 1-5 2009, in the East Kootenay Region of Southern BC. Shawn’s 12 year old son Dakota made a great stock and shot on his first archery kill, and Robert got a great buck for his first cross bow kill! Shawn and his 8 year old Keenan, and me and my 8 year old Caleb got up close and personal with some elk, that was exciting! Happy hunting everyone, the 2009 season is finally here!

Dan Leadbetter, Hunting in British Columbia

Cory, I took this buck 2 days before the season ended 2 years ago…….I’m on the right, brother in-law on the left…I shoot a Remington 300 mag, stainless with a 4-14.5 wide angle Leopold………this is the next morning which is a Sunday, we brought the deer back for photo’s as it was nearing that point of decent light to shoot the day before so photo’s would of not turned out so well, when we first spotted him he was coming towards us than he turned and started running up the hill in the back ground almost to the furthest point on the left to the tree line, brother in-law figures this buck was between 500-600 yards when the buck stopped & I dropped to the ground, bipod open, once I got on him through the scope I squeezed the first shot off, it was like seconds went by, than we could clearly hear the WHACK’’ echo back, he took a couple steps back towards the tree line , stopped and I squeezed another round off, he flinched, took about 10 steps down the hill towards me and dropped……..now he’s one a few beautiful racks on my office wall.

Ed Collett & Dan Leadbetter were on an open 1 week moose hunt north of Kitwanga…this is the first morning, we went as far as we could on an old grown up log road to the landing. we walked through the bush and down the valley until we figured was a good spot to get set up…about 15 minutes after I started to call we had 2 very nice mature bull moose coming down off a shelf across the pond about 250 yards away…….I kept calling and they kept coming, needless to say the adrenaline is starting to flow………the weather was extremely warm and our concern was if we could get the moose out quick enough because of the distance we were away from the jeep……we lost site of the 2 mature bulls as they went in behind what we thought was a meadow from where we were, I kept calling and than nothing………after about 1 hour we looked down the valley across the pond and here comes a very large mature bull, the animal was about 800 yards from where we were set up and he was in no hurry, just walking along the outside grazing as he was nearing, than he went out of site & again nothing ( Like where did they all go )…after about 45 minutes I was spotting down the furthest part of another pond which was separated as to which the beavers dammed it up, I couldn’t believe my eyes, out of no where this young immature bull moose charges up over the ledge of the dammed pond and leaps into the water, wow, something’s up here we are thinking, 5 seconds later appears this male wolf and a partner, Ed & I thought lets see what happens here and if they get close to us we’ll take one or both, the moose bye this time had been swimming towards where we were more in the middle of the old pond, as the moose swam the wolves also kept coming towards where we were, every time the moose would want to come to dry ground both wolves would come to the edge of the water and no further,’’hey we are thinking, this just might work out’’, bi-pods down and both set up we racked a shell, the wolves were now coming closer to us and if they were to cross over to our side to have a chance at the moose they had to begin crossing about 75 yards from us and if they came over they were going to be 20 yards, we waited and waited and sure enough the black male came straight across from us and stopped broad side, my brother in-law Ed squeezed the shot off and down he went like a sack of spuds, Ed & I both tried to pick up & scope the second wolf but it hadn’t come as far as this male and stayed inside the tree line so neither of us were able to take a shot, the immature bull moose stood in the pond the entire time we were they and as we packed the wolf out we looked back and he was still standing there, I’m sure he was thinking, these 2 guys are not so bad, saved my hide………after this all went down both Ed & I said, I just didn’t have the heart to take the immature bull even though he was close enough we could of lassoed him……….

Great stories, thanks for the pictures Dan and Ed!

Cougar Attacks

Posted by woody On July - 17 - 2009 5 COMMENTS

With all the recent media coverage on cougar sightings and attacks here in BC, most recently Princeton and a few weeks back it was Squamish, you have to wonder what needs to be done to control what seems to be an ever growing cat population.
A good buddy of mine and an avid cat hunter had a really good point a while back that I’d like to share.
Not unlike other trends we’re seeing in the hunting world, the number of cat hunters seems to be at an all time low. I believe one of the main reasons is that the number of guys out there running hounds, at least in our area has become really low. The houndsmen that are left, my hats off to you, keeping and training hounds is a huge job, one that all of you take a great amount of pride in for good reason. I can’t think of anything better than cutting a steaming hot cat track first thing in the morning, turning the hounds loose, watching as they race off under the snow covered branches, the sound of them baying echoing off the mountains.
Ok, I’m back, I was off hunting there for a moment.
The point I was getting to is this. We live in an area that has a one cat limit, yet we can go out practically every morning in the winter and cut tracks. If I have hounds that I have been training, feeding, and waiting patiently for winter with, I’m not going to go out and shoot the first decent cat my dogs run up a tree… season’s over. It used to be a two cat limit in our area and I think that a lot of these guys were more open to taking a good tom at any point in the season, it’s the greatest reward for your hounds, and then continuing to hunt after that in pursuit of an exceptional tom.
I know what you guys are thinking, why not keep the one cat limit and take your buddies along and let them shoot cats as well? The problem is that in the past there has been a lot of accusations of guys taking money or illegal guiding even though they’re taking their buddies along for a day of hunting. I’m not saying that this type of behavior doesn’t happen, all I know that this type of thing concerns my buddy that I go with, who wants to lose their privilege of hunting over bogus accusations.
My opinion is that I think going back to a two cat limit could be part of a real solution for what seems to be an animal that appears to have a stable population and not a lot of predation by hunters.
I’d love to get some feedback on this from some of the cat hunters out there.

British Columbia Bucks! Noel Enge, Enderby,BC.

Posted by Jammer On June - 9 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

The deer are from the Armsrong/Enderby area of British Columbia!

My first Elk was shot in the Kootneys  Sept 13,  Wow was it Cold,  Ice on the puddles, I saw a 5 point with some cows the day before so I was going to go there the next morning to take some video.  When I arrived a the area I thought I would give a buggle and to my surprise after during my call one was already calling back to me 400 yards away climbing up the bank from the river.  I blew the 2nd time and he got a bead on me. I did get the chance to video him about 40 seconds before I shot him.  It happened so fast that I didn’t get the shot on vid, but hope the next time.

Great pictures Noel, Thanks again for sending them!

2008 British Columbia Mule Deer Bucks!!

Posted by Jammer On December - 18 - 2008 ADD COMMENTS

Here are some Mule Deer pictures that have been sent to me. All of these bucks were taken in the interior of British Columbia! Ranging from Penticton all the way to 100 Mile House. I don’t have hunters names on all the deer, but they are all nice bucks. The names of the hunters will be tagged on the photo when you click to view the picture. The one head mount picture is a buck that Justin Sanesh shot last year, he was 15 and that was his first buck! If anyone has pictures they would like to send please email me (Cory) at antleroutdoors@gmail.com. Thanks again for the pictures, hope everyone had a great 2008 hunting season, if not, there is always next year!
