Antler Outdoors, Texas, July 2009!

Posted by Jammer On August - 4 - 2009 1 COMMENT

Shawn and I had a great time down in Texas with our good buddies Seth and Mike. Seth and Mike were hunting free range Axis Deer in South Texas. We could not beleive the amount of Whitetail deer down there, it is definately everything you hear about South Texas! There were also alot of Axis deer, and they were just as spooky as the whitetails. With no closed season for axis deer they get hunted year round and do not like the sight of humans or vehicles! We had a hard time compressing the hours of great footage we shot down there but here is a 6.5 minute clip that sums up most of the hunt. On the last evening we had a couple hours to hunt for Blackbuck doe’s on the outfitters other lease, that was alot of fun as well! We were guided by Matt Smalley of  “Buck Brush Outfitters”. Sorry for the audio problems on our clip from the travel down to Texas, not sure what went wrong there, the rest of the hunt was in a cabin in the middle of no where so we did not have internet or cell service to keep the semi-live hunt up to date!

Semi-live Texas Axis Deer Hunt

Posted by Jammer On July - 27 - 2009 4 COMMENTS

Shawn and I have left for our latest Texas adventure. While temperatures soar at home, hovering around ninety degrees, hunting might not be at the front of many people’s minds, but given the opportunity to sneak a hunt in during the dog days of summer was too much to resist. Especially when the opportunity arose to hunt species we’ve never pursued before, Axis deer and Blackbuck antelope.

As I’m writing this, Shawn and I are in the Dallas/Ft. Worth airport awaiting the arrival of our hunting partners, Seth Wright of Extreme Hunting Adventures and Mike Gatz, featured in our Kansas whitetail hunt back in December. With the rain falling here in Dallas, flights are being delayed and we’re patiently waiting to head to San Angelo.

Not only are we excited about the upcoming hunt, but Shawn and I are super excited to see how our semi-live hunt will work out for all of you at home. Since leaving home at ten o’clock last night, driving all night to Seattle and jumping on a plane to Dallas, we’ve been able to put together a little bit of video that we will be posting tomorrow, so stay tuned, and keep checking in as Antler Outdoors brings you our first ever semi-live hunt from Texas! Sorry, we are not sure why the audio didn’t work!

Hunting in Texas, Axis Deer and Blackbuck

Posted by Jammer On July - 17 - 2009 1 COMMENT

On the 27th of July, Shawn and I going to tape our two good buddies, Seth Wright, and Micheal Gatz, on a free range axis deer and blackbuck hunt in South Central Texas near San Angelo! Shawn and I have never seen a live axis deer let alone been on a hunt for one, so we are very excited!

Shawn and I are anxiously awaiting our new laptop that can handle editing of hi-def video. If we have our laptop before going to Texas we plan on bringing semi-live hunts to our site. We will post short video clips after each day of hunting so you all can follow and see how the hunt is going!

We don’t know a whole lot about these animals but we’ve done a little research and here’s what we’ve come up with.

Axis deer are the most prolific exotic ungulate in Texas. Introduced around 1932, the axis deer, or chital, as they’re known in their native India are a moderately large, spotted deer weighing roughly 150lbs and anatomically resembles an elk more than our native deer. The antlers on the axis deer resemble a 3pt elk.

The blackbuck are also from India and are about half the size of the axis deer. They are predominently dark in color with white bellies. Black buck are one of the only antelope where only the males have horns which spiral up to five times and can grow to a length of 29″

The one thing that both of these animals have in common is that they are both very spooky.

While there we’re hoping to get the opportunity to do some pig hunting and take a couple of those big Texas boars with our bows. So stay tuned to Antler Outdoors as we try to bring you our very first semi-live hunt from Texas July 27-31.

Here are some pictures from our second trip to Texas! On this trip we were hunting with Terry Feterl, Miles Northrup, Wes Stekl, and Craig Stehly, all from South Dakota. We had a great trip! If you have never done this before, it is so much fun and it is a perfect time of year to get away and do some hunting. It is a very feasable 5 day hunt and there are plenty of critters to hunt! If you would like any information on this combo hunt please email us at antleroutdoors@gmail.com!

Hunting Texas 2009

Posted by Jammer On February - 12 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

Shawn and I just returned from a great hunting trip in Texas. It wasn’t for Whitetail deer like you mainly here about in Texas. We were hunting with Seth Wright from “Extreme Hunting Adventures” on a hunt that every hunter should do at least once. On a five day permit you can hunt for Aoudad (Barbary Sheep) Click here to learn about the Aoudad, Barbary Sheep – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ,Javalina, Coyotes, Jack Rabbits, Quail, and even Elk if you see one, though the Elk are quite rare. Shawn was actually guiding on this trip, and I was running the video camera. We were mainly after the Aoudad, you can shoot 1 Ram and 1 Ewe. After you have shot your Sheep you can spend time hunting Javalina’s, which were a tonne of fun, there were also lots of Quail, and at night you can hunt Jack Rabbits and Coyotes, this trip was too much fun!!  We were just South of Van Horne, Texas, about 2 hours South East of El Paso, Texas. The Mule Deer were in full rut down there, we must have seen 50 different bucks, and some good ones too!! The Mule Deer season is in December so we couldn’t hunt them!

The hunt was a real Sheep hunt, lots of spotting until the Sheep are found, then plan the stalk and go. These Sheep travel in herds so it is quite hard to get close as there are so many eyeballs watching! Here are a few pictures from our hunt. I sent in all of the video from this trip to our producers in New York before we left Texas, so I don’t have alot of pictures to show, but these photo’s will give you an idea of the landscape and the Aoudad we were hunting!

Our shows will start airing in July of 2009 on “Hidden Creek Adventures” on “Wild T.V.” !  If you would like any information on how you can try this Texas hunt please contact us at antleroutdoors@gmail.com.

Cheers, Cory Jmaeff!

Kansas, 2008 whitetail Deer.

Posted by Jammer On December - 16 - 2008 ADD COMMENTS

Hi all it has been a while since I have posted an article, sorry. I am home for a month now so I will get caught up on posting articles from the 2008 hunting season.

We just got back from a 10 day hunt in Kansas, for Whitetail Deer. It was my first time in Kansas and we had a great trip. Talking to the locals you hear so many stories of big bucks, one guy in the area in October shot a 225 inch non-typical buck that will be around # 25 in the state for archery. Thats how many big bucks come out of this state. It is very easy to be patient when at any time old freak nasty could come walking out!

On the fifth night of the hunt a good buddy of ours, Mike Gatz, from Oklahoma, shot a real nice buck! We were able to get the kill shot on video as mike made a perfect shot on the buck at 189 yards. The buck is a main frame 6×4 but actually has 17 scorable points. This buck is unique as it has a third antler sticking straight out the middle of his forehead, with 2 kickers coming off of it. We gross scored Mikes buck at 163 5/8 inches. We hunted hard for 5 more days and never saw another shooter buck.

If anyone would like information on hunting in Kansas just contact us at antleroutdoors@gmail.com. Stay tunned for the full show on “Hidden Creek Adventures” airing in 2009!
